How to connect

Sign Language users: Connect using a smartphone, tablet, or computer to use both VRS and VRI services.

HSCNI staff members: Connect using your landline/mobile phone the same as any other call. This would be for accepting a VRS call – for VRI in the same location, a device would have to be shared.

You will need access to:

  • Internet connection
  • Web camera – built-in or plugged in.
  • Microphone or speakers – for VRI only

For HSCNI employees

As a service provider

To call a Deaf sign language user, all you need to do is call one of the following numbers, which will connect to one of our remote sign language interpreters, and ask for the person by name.

If they are registered, online, and available, you will be connected via the interpreter.

To call British Sign Language (BSL) users: 0333 344 6012 

To call Irish Sign Language (ISL) users: 0333 305 1143

Pre-booked assignments – BSL/ISL

If you need to arrange a face to face consultation with a Deaf sign language user (BSL or ISL), you can pre-book a remote interpreter to interpret your consultation through our Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) booking service.  This can be done using the booking form below.

We would appreciate as much notice as possible for these bookings, however, where needed, VRI sessions can be requested at late notice.

*Deaf Relay Intralingual Interpreters are Deaf professionals, who alongside a hearing Sign Language Interpreter, work with Deaf people with specific or complex language needs, such as a learning disability, mental health condition, idiosyncratic or non-standardised sign language use, or limited language development. NB: Where this type of professional is requested by HSC staff, a hearing Sign Language Interpreter would also need to booked via SLi.
