The Role:


Sign Language Interactions and Sign Video is a well-established company with a proven track record of service delivery within the public, private and voluntary sector. In addition to providing communication support services, we also have experience in working with health boards, local authorities and other organisations to scope out local needs, pilot and deliver services. We are a Face-to-Face, Video Relay Services and Video Remote Interpreting provider in the UK. We provide British Sign Language (BSL) video interpreting services to enable communication between the community of over 150,000 deaf BSL users in the UK and hearing people. Our relay service allows users to make and receive BSL interpreted video calls so that they can effectively and effortlessly communicate with each other.

The interpreter/translator will be working within the interpreting team, covering a wide range of responsibilities. They will take calls online from customers wanting sight translations or English corrections. They may be pre-booked to conduct a longer live translation with a customer.  They will also film translations of internal or external documents and communications. They will be expected to interpret live on occasion from an autocue or feed interpreter.  

They will form part of the assessments team, assessing potential interpreters who wish to join the team, as well as any quality assurance required on the current interpreting team.   

They will contribute to training and development of training, both for the current team, and for those wishing to develop their skills prior to joining the company.  

They will also work alongside the marketing team to present content for social media and other avenues, which may involve traveling to an agreed location on occasion.  

Experience required:

  • Able to work independently  
  • Able to provide excellent customer service  
  • Registered with the NRCPD, SRLPDC, or RBSLI as a Registered Sign Language Translator  
  • Experience working in a variety of domains post qualification  
  • Experience in providing sight translations and translations from pre-prepared materials  
  • Technology comfortable  
  • Ability to confidently film self-translations with appropriate technology and lighting  
  • Ability to edit videos, or willingness to learn  
  • Flexibility in your approach to work  
  • Other Sign Language skills an advantage

Person specification:

  • Online Translations
    – Take calls from customers as part of our VRS service, providing translations as required 
    – English correction of an email or document whilst customer is on screen 
    – Translating a short portion of English into BSL live on a call 
    – Typing up a short section of English from a customer using BSL live on a call 
    – Provide pre booked translation sessions with customers as requested by the scheduling team
    – Follow agreed procedures for carrying out translations 
    – Adhere to agreed boundaries of what can be undertaken in this service 
    – Where translations are pre booked, prepare appropriately, and manage your time within the session 
    – Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures 
    – Undertake relevant CPD to keep skills up to date
  • Recorded Translations
    – Manage workload based on priorities assigned by management 
    – Ensure appropriate set up is in place 
    – Prepare for and deliver translations  
    – Upload to the relevant location  
    – Conduct quality assurance for colleagues’ work where required 
    – Undertake development training as required 
    – Meet with teams working in other signed languages to ensure alignment
    – Editing of videos as required
  • Presenting 
    Manage workload based on priorities assigned by management 
    – Work with marketing on delivery of scripts to camera, for social media or alternative sites
    – Support with filming shoots as required
    – Ensure videos are edited as required (training available if required)
  • Assessments
    Manage workload based on priorities assigned by management 
    View recorded assessments from prospective interpreters and provide marks, following the agreed marking scheme 
    – Conduct skills assessment marking within agreed timeframes 
    – Contribute to any feedback necessary as required
  • Training
    – Prepare and deliver training to the team as required
    – Contribute to development of CPD offerings as required
    – Contribute to delivery of pipeline and development training as required
